Fellow fly fisherman and fly fisher ladies of the forum (if any are about), let us talk Fall Fling possibilities. It came up a couple of days ago in a comment and question in regards to the Caney Fork that it would make for a good Fall Fling destination. I am open for what ever is out there and where the majority of the group wants to go. I realize it is the middle of July, but if the rest of you are as busy as I am these days it will be here before we know it. So lets take this time and have discussion upon it. One thing to keep in mind when mentioning tailwaters is that if TVA is running water through the dam, then wading possibilities and most of the time the fishing in general goes out the window. If you have it in an area that has other possibilities around it, example small trout streams, then you can use that as a bail out. If anybody knows what the Caney's generating schedule usually is in the fall that will be of big help. Or if you happen to have TVA's cold water plan, that would help to. I went to the meeting back in March, I will see what I can't dig up. Petey

When we go in October, they usually run the water starting at about 10:00 so we get up early and fish down low for a few hours until the water comes up. Then we go back to the campground and tie lies about the days fishing. Then the water goes back down in the late afternoon and we get in a few more hours of fishing before dark. I would be fine with any dates or any place for the fall fling, but I already have plans for the 3rd weekend in October and the 2nd week of September.

I just thought I'd jump in with my 2 cents worth, though I don't get a vote since I won't be able to attend a fall fling. I just fished a stretch of the Carney fork with Hootie Hoo and TentWing yesterday. I'll leave the real stream report with specifics to them and stick to my impressions. It was good. Very, very good. At least as good as the Provo, Green and E Fork of the Sevier that I'm very familiar with. A beautiful combination float/wade day-long trip with some of the very nicest folks I've met. Lots of fish, three species, and a wide variety of sizes, too. Saw trout as thick as my thigh in there. The generation schedule they are running does not preclude doing a lot of wading -- hour long, single generator pulses about four times a day. Nothing remotely dangerous about it. Fish density about like the Provo, which rate about 6,000 or more fish per mile. Three anglers, one boat, three trifectas of browns, rainbows and brookies. Hootie Hoo knows that water, too. Knew exactly how to play it to maximize angler success. I know it's a bit of a drive for some of the ET folks (about a 2-1/2 hour drive from downtown Knoxville to the water), but it's really worth it (Ooooh, they're in there). I'm really sorry I didn't get to meet Petey, Varmit, and some of the rest of you. We came early fished hard, stayed late, and had a GREAT day on the water. I'd do it if I were you.... Thom

For several reason the Caney sounds like a good idea for a fling. 1... it has a camp ground 2 .... It is big enough to handle a group of us. 3.... Easy enough to shuttle if we need an Armada of drifters, Riverhawks and toons 4 .......It is having a good year 5....... If we have to travel it is an easy trip...(.straight shot down I-40 ) much easier on gas and travel time than the winding twisting roads we have had to travel for past flings. October sounds like a good time cool enough that will be able to sleep without being hot in tents Plus we don't have to get too creative when tying up flies for the Caney

BTW, I hope I haven't fallen into some kind of inside joke regarding the Fall Fling. It appears that I'm the only one interested. OK, what gives?

Caney sounds good to me.. Was over there a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty jam up.. Not a bad drive over there.. The way back was a nightmare though.. Got in that mess of traffic due to the truck wreck carrying titanium tetrachloride.. Little over an hour and a half on the way over and 6 hours to get home.. Marmot

P.S. standard ?......you out there? You think a weekend in October is a good time to fly outta Nevada...............

It appears there is a small ground swell for the Caney. I have not heard anything against it, and no one has spoke up in favor of anything else. I am all for the Caney, but for scheduling purposes the sooner we can hammer down a date the better. I will go ahead and start a thread so we can all go ahead and vote for a date. I can go ahead and tell you guys that the 1st or 3rd weekend of October would be better for me because those are weekends my wife does not work at the Hospital. But this is a group thing and we will do what best fits the group. I will work around whatever pops up. Petey

I'd love to be there, but I don't think I can. It's that time of the year again for me.....
Thanks, man.
