Going after shellcracker in the morning! My dad and his best friend have cleaned over 100 this week, all around a pound or better. They move up into the river this time every year and stay for a month or so. It's a good time to stock the freezer, with some really good eating fish. We went to Lake Eustues in central Florida back in march, to catch them with grass shrimp under the lilly pads. It was kinda of slow but we ended up with about 50 but you could hardly get your hand around any of the ones we kept. To here dad, what they have been catching this week rivals what we were catching in Florida! Talk about simple fishing, in Florida we took 13' cane poles with a length of mono tied of the end, with a #4 aberdean hook and a grass shrimp for bait. The rods are about $10 and the hooks are about 10cents and the grass shrimp are free.
Looking forward to a fish fry!!

Riverman, Yes thats Lake Eustis, bad spelling on my part.
We cleaned 53 thurs. . We toughed it out in the wind and cold for about 8 hours. The bite was slow but we stayed at it until it started raining, and it was a bitter cold rain. The fish we caught were very nice.
Owl, I went giging one time this year. I used to go at least 5 times a summer but hardley ever go anymore. I had a camper set up on the HI this summer at Reliance Fly and Tackle. I was camped there with a friend one night, we kept 4 trout and a rockfish that day which we cooked on the fire that night, along with 2 big T-bones! After dinner drinks followed and along about mid-night Chris got the munchies and said "I could really go for some frog legs about now." We just happened to have a gig with us, so we went down to Childers creek and giged two big bullfrogs and brought them back to the fire. It made one hell of a midnight snack! Thats the extent of my frog giging this year.

A buddy of mine, Jay Arp, and myself and another friend spent the weekend on the North River back over the summer. We had an evening very similar to your, except Jay and I decided to do Crawfish instead. We ended up rounding up about 6 of them, but there was 3 of us to feed. That wasn't going to be enough so we released them. Next time we do it we are going to make sure we get an earlier start... Hunting critters at midnight in the stream is just too much fun. Petey

Jay, I spent many a summer vacation in Eustis as a child growing up, with my grandparents. They would take me to every pull off on the road that ran along the side of that lake so I could fish.Caught many a Speckled Perch along them little Bush whacked trails leading to the water.Funny thing,I haven`t thought about "Lake Eustis", for years, now. Thank`s for bringing up "OLD" but good memories .
