Members:
Just wanted to let you all in on a little known secret of the trade, and that is the theory of using furled leaders.
Now, I know we can all go spend $8 bucks on a flourocarbon leaders and be very satisfied with our purchase- but, what if you could only buy tippet. What if you could use one leader for up to 2 or 3 years or longer?
Well you can! It's a thing called a furled leader, and I have recently fallen in love with these things. It is basically a 5-6 foot leader section furled out of a single strand of monofilament or nylon, and then you add a tippet section to the end. These generally cost $7-8 a piece, and will last a very long while.
I personally only know of two dealers, both of which create exceptional leaders for low quality prices. If you are interested in the dealer information, shoot me an e-mail and I will get you in-touch with the folks at both companies.

I don't want to be rude but I stay away from the furled leaders. I used Blue Sky Flyfishers and they were the worst, For the fishing I'm doing up in the high country they won't hold up. They frayed like sewing thread. Some people like em' but for mountain fishing I don't recommend them.

That's one opinion. I fish only Mountain Streams and have never had a problem, of course mine are had woven/furled though and the quality may be different. Del Roberts supplies me with them.

I have been using Orvis braided leaders and they are good for at least one season of hard fishing. The key is to check out the leader before you buy it. I really didn't like them the first year I tried them( '99 I think), but they are much improved since then. Still, I have had a few that have nicks in them, and they were really a big 'ole mess. The ones I have on now though are fine. Someone who only fishes once every few weeks could get two years out of one easy. They are about $8 also, I think.

In the words of Beaver, " Gee, it's swell, Wally!" I think it's about the best looking, easiest on the eyes message board I've come across. I just wish I had more to add on East TN trout fishing. Maybe in the spring I can get up to that CLinch or whatever it is you guys fish. Hopefully, sometime next spring, I can get one of those wooden poles you guys like so much too. Working enough now to afford it! owl PS - Josh, you're BB looks good too, I mihgt try to swing by there every once in a while and check on it.

Owl, if you have never been to the Clinch or the Hiwassee below the powerhouse you really need to take a day and drive over the mountain. The HI is one of those places that you can hang out all day and if for some odd reason you get skunked you fell like you time was still well spent hanging out in such a beautifuly place. Right now the Hi is generating a lot of water, two turbines all day, but it can be waded and some nice fish can come on water such as this. I know you know where Hiwassee.net is to get info. If not you can email me and I will answer any question you have. If I can't I will find somebody that can. If you get the urge to fish it and want someone to show you a couple of places to wade on two turbines just let me know! Petey

Thanks Mr. Petey. I attended some sort of gathering there a couple of years ago, and got to fish it for a few hours. The first day, we fished at a big flat spot with an island. I think it was one parking area up from the one with the trails to the stairsteps. Bugs were hatching, and we caught a few on dry flies. I was gonna show Bigga a little caddis skittering technique, but he declined, informing me that it was " beer-thirty " ! The next day, we walked up the tracks and fished the stairsteps. Should have driven. That walk was ok, for about the first half-mile, but then dodging the RR ties got old. We fished up near the powerhouse, too. Didn't catch anything, but I think it was more our fault than the rivers'. Then, too....at some point there was about 8 of us....including Tentwing, and maybe ROcky??, that waded out on the rock ledges just below the powerhouse ramp, and everyone caught fish on dries......except me and milliam and lil joe( I think - weren't you there joe?). I liked it, but at the time, I couldn't afford another out of state lic. Now, I can afford it, but who knows when I'd find the time to fish it. I'll holler at you guys if I'm headin' up that way for sure though. owl

Yep, I was there too Owl. I was at the very bottom of the run with Grizzly Hackle. I believe that was the NGTO Spring Fling a few years back. That's when I met Tentwing and look whats become of me ! I know it may sound a little funny, but to me, the best part of those big events is hanging with all the other fishermen and swapping tales...and not necesarily the fishing! I can't wait for ARK 04' Rocky
