I am in the market for a new reel and was looking into the sage reels. Does any one use these reels and if so what is your opinion of the reels. Thanks-- KevinP

Hey KevinP, Welcome to the board, I noticed you said you are from Kentucky have you been on the Cumberland lately? I just bought an SLT 490-4 from a fly shop that really pushes Sage and they set me up with a Tibor Tailwater reel that I really love especially on big fish because of the good drag they have. I have no experience with the Sage 3000. When I went in to buy the rod I was going to get an Abel reel but was talked into the Tibor. Good luck on your quest for a new reel. Sanman

Hello Sanman. I will take a look at the tibor reel. I have not been to the Cumberland this year. Last year I went and had a great time. Caught quite a few fish all between 10 to 14 inches. If you go I am shure you will have a great time. I have not looked at the regulations this year but I hear they made some changes on size limits. Good luck if you go.--KevinP

Kevin, I don't know much about them. But, for the money you are going to spend, you have lots of choices. Ross, Bauer, Lamson, Galvan and Tibor all make some great reels. I have always wondered about the durability of a reel with a skeletal frame I know it's good if weight is an issue, but I don't know if it could take the "beating"(code for falling and dropping) I'd put it thru. What ever reel you buy, make sure it balances with the rod you are going to fish it with.

I have one on a Sage Center Axis Rod I bought used. The reel is light weight for a large arbor, and thus balances lighter weight rods much better than most large arbor reels. It is very well made, and although not a "disc drag" type reel in reels made for the lower rod weights, the reel has an excellent drag system, and will protect light tippets much better than many large arbor reels I have seen. Bauer and Galvan as well as Ross make a great reel, and I have several Ross normal size reels, and a large arbor orvis battenkill. I like the Sage better then the Orvis, and think it balances a lighter weight rod better than the Bauer or Galvan. If you are fishing with a 6 wt or up- go with the Ross, Bauer, or Galvan. If you are looking at a 4wt, seriously ck out the Sage.
