A little over a year ago I picked up a Teton Reel off ebay for about a hundred dollars brand new. I had read some decent reviews and thought I would take a chance. Normal listing price of this reel is between 175 - 270 dollars. Ranging in lines sizes of 3-12 weight. My reel listed for 195 dollars in Cabelas.
Teton makes two diffent kinds of reels, the Teton itself and the Tioga. The Teton is considered the upper end reel of the two. Both styles of reel can be had in the standard spool or large arbor. For the money I have heard the Tioga is hard to beat.
The Teton reel is machined aluminum and is powder coated. It is an extremely light weight reel. It is lighter than most any other reel on the market in the same price range. The Teton comes in different colors from black to gun metal blue to anodized silver. It has a well designed disc drag system and not many moving parts.
If I had any complaints about this reel it is that it doesn't hold as much backing as specified and getting the spool off and on with line on the spool can be trying at times. The reason being, is that they machined the reel to such exact tolerances that it leaves very little room for error of any kind. If you drop it in the sand or gravels it needs to be flushed in the river a couple of times or you will hear the silt grind when you go to reel in line.
Over all I have enjoyed fishing with this reel and it has become a nice match for my Sage 9' 5wt DS2. It was bought originally for my Heddon 9' Bamboo rod, but it is a little too light.
In then end I would rate this reel as a Elk Hair Caddis......
