I spent today chucking streamers on a two turbine Clinch flow. FIsh action was great.....fish catching was so so, and incredibly large trout sightnings were plentiful.
Anywho, Figured I'd write a little review on the new ORvis ZG Rods.
I've got a 9' 6wt tip flex and the newest is a 9' 8wt midflex.
These rods are very light. Casting all day long is effortless, meaning less Icy Hot on the shoulder in the afternoons. Especially when your spending all day tossing Tungsten streamers and heavy nymphs.
Both rods and flex values are very powerfull. Properly loaded and delivered can go to backing very easily. Not that anybody really needs to cast into the backing.....but it's cool to be able to to it. Both rods will cast heavy streamers very well, with great accuracy and turnover. THe new 8wt actually cast better than a lot of 5 wts I've fished.
The ZG's are cosmetically some of the most beautiful rods I've ever seen. The ferrules are seamless and completely finished. The hardware is top of the line and the reel seats are very eye catching. The 6 wt has the new banded real seat over wood insert, while the 8 wt has a saltwater real seat with fighting butt. The finish on the rods, coupled with the thermoplastic encasing technique have made for a very durable rod. Not personally seen a broken rod in my boat in a long time.....but the folks from Orvis have said that their returns have fallen off some 25% since they began the thermoplastic encasing process on their premium rods.
Anyway, I'd have to give the ZG's two thumbs up, or two mating caddis, or whatever the rank is for a great product. I'd advise anybody who's in the market for a new premium rod to test drive on the Zero G's.
Oh and Marmot......your going to love yours man! ;D
