Just bought a new Sage SLT 389-4 at a discounted price and I couldn't be happier! I had a 2pc. version a while back and if I had not an obsession with one day having a 4pc. I probably wouldn't have sold it. At the time I believe I didn't have the right line to get it really tuned in either. Well, after some trading, I made a dash for the 389-4 as I was afraid all of the new ones would soon disappear. After trying a few lines, a discounted Cortland Peach WF3F made its way into my hands and on to my favorite Lamson Velocity reel. Holy Cow, the Peach just made the rod flat-out sing!!! I don't think I have ever married a rod and line so well! This rig is Dialed-in! This rod must be the sweetheart of the whole line-up. I have done some extensive casting with the 590-4, and quite a bit of fishing with the 486-4 (now gone to make way for the new 389). None of them just cast this smoothly and effortlessly. I appologize for the ramble, but I just had to share how much i like this rod. I have had it out on the Caney Fork and the Clinch so far. It will handle every type of fly I would normally fish on tailwaters (even a sz10 BH woolly). My 5 wts, which have been my mainstay rods on the tails might be collecting dust now. This is an awsome midge and small fly stick. I highly recommend it to anyone who has been on the fence for wanting a lightline rod below 4wt. It has a bunch of reserve power to boot...for fun I peeled about 80' of line off the reel and managed to consistantly get get nearly all of it through the guides with a sz 16 comparadun on a 12' leader with good control standing knee deep in the river.
Enough bragging. These rods are on discount up to about 30% at nearly every Sage dealer i have checked on. Get 'em while you can. The New replacement ZXL is starting to hit the shops but it comes with a heftier pricetag. They say the blank is "pommegranite" or a burgunndy color. I don't know about you guys but the SLT is probably the best looking rod that Sage ever produced. I am totally stoked with my purchase. I won't be buying another rod for a while although I know where there is a Diamondglass 804-2 with my name on it for a bargain price (new one too), but that is an entirely different story
