I had the pleasure of meeting up this morning with a couple of friends whom I've not got to fish with near enough over the past year or so. Tentwing and WeFurr drove up from Jawja to spend some time with me on the HI. It was pretty cold out this morning, in fact there was quite a bit of ice in the boat ! But we never let that deter us. We began our day with dries and the fish we're interested right away. TW also managed several fish on his nymphing and high sticking skills. The only real hatches to speak of today were a few sporadic grey caddis (#16-18) and some even more sporadic BWO's (#24). However the most active feeding of the day was on a #16 orange palsa indicator. It was amazing whatching those fish. They'd grab it violently and hang onto it for three or four seconds before they realized it wasn't food and it had no hook. Then they'd let it go. Eventually we switcthed over to bright stimulators #16 and we slayed them the rest of the day. We didn't keep count of fish but it had to be over 50...probably under 70. Nothing much over twelve inches though. We had the river to ourselves for the most part, only seeing a few boats on the morning run and and none this evening...minus Toadfrog and Deano. We also spotted a good amount of wildlife today other than the fish...lot's of squirrels, a possible hellbender, one Asian White Water Snake, and two scandinavian leaf cutter spiders ! I had a blast today Gents...can't wait to do it again! Rocky

Great report. I have one too....similar to that....minus the leafcutters, snakes and ...umm...fish. I sat at home, and waited on the rains to come, and wished I was fishing. OK, so that's not so much like yours. : Maybe tomorrow. Thanks for sharing that story - who hooked the snake? owl

Man you keep rambling on about Asian White Water snakes you going to scare everybody off. But if your wanting the water to yourself, then I agree! The Asian White Water Snake is a rare species of snake that only lives in two places in the world. Our Hiwassee Scenic River and Tibet. The snake is extremely dangerous and shouldn't be messed with. They like to hang out in weed beds and on over hanging tree limbs. They feed on squirl, rabbit, possum, Raccoon and Bamboo casters. If you see one of these snakes please take all precautions and flee the seen. These snakes are known for also eating small children and monster browns. The scandanavian leaf cutter spider got it's name from a tuff of white hair that runs down the middle of it back. They are found primarily on small streams in the Cherokee National Forest and the upmost reaches of Norway and Sweden. They were brought here by immigrants that were passing through from Norway in the mid to late 1700's. This spiders bite is so deadly that if bitten you might as well make one last cast because you will not make it back to civilization in time. Death is almost always instant. So beware of these creatures of the Hiwassee and the CNF...... I know this may sound a little odd, but the best repellent is Brute Cologne. You must apply it liberally to all parts of the body and clothing before fishing, hunting or hiking. If you do not have Brute another home remedy is bathing in Vinegar before setting out. I would suggest purchasing Brute! Good luck to all you good men and be on the look out! Petey

Petey, If I was planning a trip up that way, do you know of a guide service that has drift boats that are B.P.E., so that I don't have to worry about picking some up on the way.
( For those of you not familiar with high-tech guide terminology, that stands fer " Brute Propellant Equipped ")
Thank you. I thinks you is very smart.
