I figured with it being a holiday the mountains and local watering holes would be thick with people so I decided to do the warm water thing find some smallies on a popper and hopefully a poormans bone on a fly....first time ever for both and man it doesn't disappoint, especially the carp - that thing was beast! I you havn't tried either - you have to, if nothing else than for the thrill of a smallie crashing that popper or the pure power of the carp..

Tried out a jointed hellgrammite pattern I made for a swap for the LRO board - see if this will get you to the pic...it don't look much dry but wet, seems to do the trick and had several fish moved to it. I still have to work on the take and hook set... littleriveroutfitters.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10540

Getting the bone is killer. I haven't ever targeted them before when out fishing. I have given it quite a bit of thought, just have never been quite sure how to approach them. I see carp flies all the time in the magazine I get and wonder how well the work. Thanks for sharing Jermz Petey Oh yeah.. good looking Hellgrammite.

Oohh! I can answer this one! Actually, not a whole lot different than trout. Usually you're fishin' for the guys in shallow still water, and just like most other fish that feel exposed, they spook really easy. They see about as well as trout do, too, so you've got to put the sneak on them if the water is clear. They don't like loud, noisy presentations, either. You can use flies tied specifically for carp, but there's usually no need to, except maybe for grass carp. About the only specific fly I've ever felt the need for is one designed to imitate the reproductive part of a cottonwood tree (works a lot like dandelion seeds). Don't think you folks have too many of those cottonwoods in ET, as I recall. I've seen the species specific patterns get into the range of the ridiculous, though, like the popcorn imitation I've seen for carp near the marinas at lake Mead, where old stale popcorn is sold to folks to feed the carp. I kinda think it's cheating to even fish those trusting souls. Do tie regular patterns in a "keel" style, though -- you'll hang up less often. Buggers work. So do a lot of soft hackles. A lot of nymphs, lightly weighted work, too. I've never tried one of those articulated hellgrammite patterns Jermz used, but I think I'll give 'em a try. A reel with a good drag and room for quite a bit of backing is pretty important. They really can run long, hard, and fast. Long, kinda fine leaders help, too. These guys are getting better known and more accepted as a good sport, but I think they're still way under rated by most folks. They're a blast on clean, clear mountain lakes in mid-summer, when the trout fishing slows down most places. Wade the flats and sight fish them - it's how they got the name freshwater bonefish. They even have a tournament every year on a lake in northern Colorado, and a lot of the guys fishing the tourney are local trout guides. They say it's the most fun they have all year.
Twice so far I've hooked a carp and was enjoying things quite a lot when I attracted the kind of attention that large fish seem to get. People came racing over to see what I had until they saw it was a carp. Then they go away, muttering unkind things under their breath. Like I'd defrauded them. I was still smiling, though.

Great pictures Jermz. Give me a call and we can chase some smallies in Sevierville. I had a first on a fly rod last week. I caught about a 18" catfish on 5wt with a prince nymph. It was great. The pond is stocked and ready of if you want to bring your boys up sometime. Give me a call. Chad.

I've been after a cat too , I saw a humungous one the other day, big ol channel cat that took a swipe at my fly but no hookup...
