A buddy of mine and I decided to kick off Memorial Day weekend in the best fashion we knew how.
Fort Loudon Lake is just over the hill from where I live. Most of the time I find myself driving a good clip to get to a special piece of water. But with today's gas prices staying closer to home seems to be the theme.
We put on as the sun was setting and no sooner than pushing off I hooked my first largemouth. After trolling along the bank working the underbrush, we pulled up to a nice overhanging bank with honeysuckle dripping over the edges making for an inviting home. A crowd had started to form, for we were fishing right behind where the radio station was setting up for Rockin' the Docks. Kids and parents that were waiting for the movie to come on had started to watch with the kids clamoring for us to hook something, anything that looked like a fish. I made a cast that landed right in the mouth of an opening in the honeysuckle. Made two strips with the puglisi and bam! The water started to boil as my rod was bent in a perfect rainbow shape. Then the water exploded as the bass broke the surface thrashing about to release itself from what had snagged it. For the next minute or so it was a give and take battle. I knew I had to get this one to the drag. Once I had the fish on the reel I was able to quickly get this hard fighting largemouth under control and to the boat.
All the while the kids that had been wanting us to catch something badly had taken notice of the splashing and chaos that was occurring below on the water. As I reached down and pulled the bass from the murky water of Fort Loudon I held it high for all to see. An applause erupted from the crowd that had gathered, and the masses were satisfied.
We tamed a few more bass as the evening wore on but none of them put a bend in the rod as the crowd pleaser did.
