I took a co-worker to the Nantahala on Thursday. He has been wanting to learn to flyfish. He told me that he had been trying to teach himself on the Hiwasee, but he had had very little success.
After arriving at the Nanny, I discovered that he had been fishing with an ultra-fast 7 weight rod which had been outfitted with 4 weight level line, and a 7 foot piece of 16 lb test mono for a leader.
Upon further questioning I learned that this rig had been put together for him by the Fly-fishing guru of the fishing section of a local Sporting goods store.
This same person armed him with mostly size #12 dry flies and explained to him that allowing these flies to hang in the drift would be the way that a flyfisherman would fish the Hiwassee..........
Now the above statements paint a picture that is like a made for TV movie of why we should always try to support our local fly shop, aviod the "Mega-mart" experts.
After fixing all of the above mess, and trying to convince him that his dimestore guru was mostly wrong, I gave him a 2 hour long on water seminar on the art of high-stickin a dead drift through a run and allowing your fly to make the swing at the bottom of the run.
At the end of this nymphing lesson he had landed 7 bows and missed about twice that.... Needless to say he now thought himself ready for his on fly-fishing TV show..... ,......and I quote " Man !,... This is simple I should been fishin with a fly rod all along,... yeah I shoulda took this up years ago." .......
Well we fished together the rest of the evening and his final count was around two dozen, and the Nanny had been exceptionally kind to me as well.
I walked away from the expirience hoping I had repayed at least a small portion of the debt that I owed to many folks who helped me out of the fog of cunfusion somewhere along the way during my on learning curve. And glad to have yet another fishing partner.
However much to my dismay , my co-worker approached me this morning very confused. He explained to me that over the weekend he had went to a fly shop to do some research. After looking at rods in the 4 and 5 weight range, and comprable reels and lines , he told the clerk while he was not going to be purchasing any big items today he did want to stock up on some flies............
He then procedes to tell me that when he told the salesperson that he want to buy some Rump-Hackle Speys ,Micro-Boogers, and some Olive Speckled Birds. " Man we had a banner day up there with them flies and I think I should stock up " ...... And then that the clerk gave him a disorted look of confusion, and told him he had never heard of any those flies before.
Doah!. ............ Ok so when you tie your own patterns is probably best to tell the person your teaching this , so they dont go red facing themselves and the local shop owner, and ultimatly you too.
Note to self,.........Self ; When you think your doing a good deed by trying to clear up someone's confusuon dont go adding to that cunfusion. Ya Bone-Head!
I'm sure none of you guys have NEVER left a newbie dazed and confused..... .......Tentwing
