Hope you guys are doing good. Here's the latest video I made up in the smokies. I didn't use any still shots this time. I think it came out pretty decent. This video was made about a week ago on a backpacking/fishing trip with Unclebert, Chuckwalla, and I. vimeo.com/1911982

marmot answering here....I was using a canon HF100, but I added a lot of effects in post. I edited on Sony Vegas Pro because only it (sony vegas family) or Final Cut Pro can handle the AVCHD format (well). All of the editors have trials and you can download them for free for usually a 30 day trial. That's how I decided. Stay away from Pinnacle or google search it and you will see it crashes way too much with the HD stuff. I used Magic Bullet looks a sweet plug- in with Sony Vegas to color grade, and to add all of the video effects. I did the graphics in Sony vegas..pretty basic stuff there though. I know I am barely pushing vegas yet. One thing of caution, I am running a 2.4ghz dual core processor, and it struggles with the hd. They recommend 2.8. For now it's workable with tweaking of my computer settings, but the renders can take upwards of 4 hours for that 15 minute job. I imagine it would render much faster with a better processor and a few more gigs of ram, but I do have 3 gigs of ram. Hope this helps.

Labrador, you're right about the processor requirements when dealing with HD.
It takes a while to get used to those requirements. I'm getting good editing results using Final Cut Pro on a 2.8 Xeon dual-quad-core-processor Mac Pro. Especially when rendering effects (motion graphics and other some other SFX). I notice it still takes a minute or two to get the job done, though. But it's not nearly as bad as rendering 3D stuff with LightWave or MAYA. For that I've got to use a lab full (35) of core2duo iMacs working together as a distributive-computing configuration (a small render-farm) and it can still take many hours (or a weekend or two) to do a short scene with a couple of camera angles . ;D
But that's not what's really good about your stuff. Your composition (and scenery and subject, too) are just really hard to beat. You always take me home when I really need it.
That's special.

thanks dude. Yeah magic bullet is the major slow down, plus any effects, but magic bullet adds to the render times about X10. It's crazy, but it's also crazy good, IMO.

That was really put together well Lab. Always enjoy these videos and your mountain shots. I don't get up there enough. It takes me back to special days spent at higher elevations. Thanks for sharing and keep them coming. Petey

Yeah, you go, man. Can't argue with results. I'll walk my (Mac) side of the street and you walk yours. Affordability and taste are what you can do and like to do (and are familiar with). Sounds like you've upgraded in a major way on the camera side of the equation with the Cannon. Pretty good choice. Anyhow, keep on keepin' on. Yer' makin' my day on a regular basis. Thom By the way, check out the new, replacement, brookie. Boulder Mtn, Utah was kind this year. i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm88/standardtoo/2008-10-06016.jpg

Thanks again dude. Yeah Final cut pro at 1299 is way outta site for me. So for now, I am still a PC, plus add in the cost of a Mac that can run these programs, and I could buy 3 PC's powerful enough to run the world.
I checked the photo...That is one heck of a brookie. When I was in Colorado, I found out pretty quickly that they hate brookies. I was like uh, ok.

Yeah, the trout snobz 'R ever where. Brookies don't belong out west and take even more habitat away from the native cutts.
Okay. Sometimes I agree. Even Gierach disparaged the hybrid trouts, splakes and tigers and such. I've fished for them and recommend them highly. Great sport and no danger from unwanted reproduction. Never heard him complain much about brook trout, though.
I'd like to see the healthiest trout possible (native to the area) in a given body of water, too. But these brookies were put where no trout ever tread before, at about 10 or 11,000' or more high on a mountain with several dozen mostly isolated lakes. The Utah game folks are fairly good about that stuff. I say no harm, no foul. The state record (from a lake on that mountain) is 7.5lbs by the way.
;D Gotta go to Labrador to do that anywhere else, Labrador.
