Well my report won't be as classy as Labradors - guess I have to step it up and start taking some video and get into the game...but I had a good day out in the mtns. Seeing as how I found myself solo and decided that since I haven't been in the Park in a while, going for a Trout Slam would be the best way to visit all the waters I like to fish... I started out @ Metcalf and flogged the water a while with a dry despite no hatch activity and finally decided to high stick some runs with a PT. I tied into a nice brown about a foot long, lean and snakey - it was a great fight...the water was 60 around noon time and I was hoping to see some more bug activity as I headed up to Elkmont looking for a 'Bow since none had made an appearance yet.
Elkmont (just below) turned out several average 'bows on a small para-thunderhead...I was surprised on the way that I did not see very many anglers out - maybe the thread of rain or everyone suited up and went combat fishing the tailwaters.
At any rate, with 2/3 of the troutslam complete, I headed to higher ground for my spec...and wouldn't you know, it started to rain, so much so my dry would not stay afloat...but it passed and the brookies were really active and it took only a few casts to finish the trifecta...So I continued to fish and then I saw this nice brookie - I saw this nice sized orange-red stripe finning near the surface of a slack pool, but several of my cast pulled out 2 'bows and a smaller spec before this one sipped my fly. The color was outrageous and it was about 8-9 inches...as I was sitting there photo it, I hear "Nice brookie" from over my shoulder and I look up to see two conservation officers looking down on me...we chatted - I expressed my concern about the growing number of bows here over the years and they agreed that there's too many.... They went on their way, I was surprised they didn't ask for my license...
Anyhow, it was a good day to be out about, the rain was temporary and there wasn't the usual amout of traffic - can't ask for anything better.
