Soo, its been a long while since I've been out on the water and I was fortunate to finally get out this past Saturday. I fished with Rusty and a new buddy of his on Abrams in the morning and Little river below Metcalf...high sticking blackbirds and pts produced some fish mainly in the 6-8" range, though it it took some doing...
While on Little River I moved up to a small fall that was pushing water against a boulder that was then sheeting out over a flat rock angled just just under the surface...there sat a nice little rainbow riding in a cushion on ytop that flat rock. It was tailing side to side with the current, but you could tell it was in a little softer seam created by the lip of that rock and not more than 6" deep. No way to really present a fly to it. so I sneaked to take a closer look. I was just about on top of it and it was still unaware of me as it tailed side to side as if searching for food to wash over that lip...so what the heck, I shot my hand at it and grabbed it. As I brought my hand out of the water just as quickly with the 'bow in hand - I was crackin' up, laughing histerically at what just happened as the fish then wriggled like crazy and squirted outta my hands into my chest . I tried to pin it so I could get a better grip to show it to Rusty...but it flopped off me (I was giggling like a school girl and couldn't keep hold)...
Far fetched, but true - I wish I had a video or even a pic of the fish, but it got away - darting off into the current. Maybe it was blind or sick or something, but then again - maybe it was just caught off guard...at any rate - I guess if highstickin ain't workin, you have to resort to more drastic measures...a trout in hand is worth two in the river...
