Rare occurence today -- had 3 fish take a dry fly down into their gills. Although the hooks I was using had been debarbed, I decided that I would probably do some serious injury and cause a lot of blood loss if I tried to remove the hooks. So, I simply cut the tippet and released the fish. Now I'm wondering if that was the best decision -- the fish will have the fly in their gills for a number of days or weeks. What would you have done in this case?

Probably the best thing you could have done. They will probably survive if they weren't bleeding. Hugh

If they were barbless, they'll probably work themselves out rather quickly.
One of the local guides here on the Nant, caught a 14 inch brookie that was trying to pass a large plastic worm.... with hook, line and sinker attatched.
He gently pulled it out and released the fish. If something like that can pass through a fish's digestive system, a little old fly in the gills won't hurt.
