Close! You can use it like egg[plant, but it is a mushroom. A purple spored puff ball - they've been popping up everywhere lately. We hunted these in peoples yards the other day. This one was the monster....we found close to 10lbs of these things, and if you like mushrooms, they're pretty tasty. The flesh is almost angel food cake-ish, and tends to take on other flavors like tofu. Fried was decent, though sauteed with butter, garlic, s/p, on low heat really brings out the shroomy flavor. It was great with scrambled eggs.

Ya, I hear ya...as the saying goes - there are old mushroom hunters and then there are bold mushroom hunters, but there ain't any old and bold ones... I've been singling out the only handful of choice edibles that have no real poisonous look alikes. When in doubt, throw it out though. I'm ready for spring morel hunting, thats where its at!
